The Seal Action Coalition is leading the charge to seek an amendment or exception to the Marine Mammal Protection Act which would allow us to reclaim our shorelines from an infestation of gray seals.
The SAC works with individuals and organizations interested in supporting legal and humane efforts to prevent the destruction of our coastal environment and its traditional uses including:commercial and sport fishing, bathing, surfing, boating and other coastal activities which contribute to the culture and economy of the Cape and Islands. The SAC is a not-for-profit group with a primary focus on providing information and supporting appropriate government action to abate the seals.
Facilitating a grassroots lobbying effort to remove the gray seals from the extraordinary protection afforded them under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
The SAC has communicated its concerns to officials responsible for the administration of the Marine Mammal Protection Act; namely, officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Multiple letters have been sent to the editor of Nantucket's local newspaper and the editors of saltwater fishing magazines have been contacted.
